I believe meteors are an essential part of VCM. Not only do they provide one with meteoric iron, but they are extremely useful in hunting for bases. They introduce a raiding tactic wherein people look for large groups of meteors, then begin mining out a region in hopes of finding a base. By disabling meteor spawns, you are revoking people's ability to raid bases, thus making playing on the server/modpack no fun.
